What’s the caddies role (other than carrying the bag)? Friend, mentor, psychologist, and possibly team member are some of the names that come to mind. Last week at The Player’s Championship we watched Jon Rahm and his caddy Adam Hayes discuss his approach shot on the par 5 11th hole. His ball was sitting in a bunker and needed 50 yards of draw to miss the water and the trees in front of him. Here’s how it looked on TV.
Rahm had the option of laying up in the fairway then knocking one close and putting it in. Instead he disagrees with Hayes and hits it in the water. It makes you wonder what the relationship is like between caddy and player. When does the caddy have the authority to overrule the player and have they discussed the strategy of how the relationship should work. With the tournament on the line Rahm makes a poor decision and you can tell by Hayes’ expressions that he is not happy about the choice.
